Wanda Gets an Amen—from the Guardian

Well, Wanda isn’t the only woman looking askance at the feminist bona fides of McCain’s running mate. The Guardian Online’s Jessica Valenti wrote today:

The New York Post calls her "a feminist dream". National Public Radio asks if she's the "new face of feminism". And the Wall Street Journal, ever subtle, calls it "Sarah Palin Feminism". … Never mind that Palin talks about her teen daughter's decision to keep her child while awaiting the chance to take that choice away from American women. Don't worry about how Palin cut funding for a transitional home for teenage mothers. And forget that, under Palin's mayoralty, women in Wasilla, Alaska, were forced to pay for their own rape kits to the tune of up to $1,200.

I Coulda Tell Yuh Dat

According to this graphic from the New York Times, Canadians spend less discretionary income on clothing than they do on recreation or household goods.

Duh.

I guess Montreal couldn’t pull up the national average all on its own. As for the rest of y’all Canadians: black is for funerals, sweatshirts and sweatpants are for workouts, and all you office gentlemen in Oxford shirts: blue is not your only alternative to white. Mkay? Go ahead and dream in Technicolor.

Once again, thanks to Daring Fireball.

English Is a Language as Live as Live Can Be

Thanks to John Gruber I’ve discovered lexicographer Erin McKean, who merited two posts on Gruber’s Daring Fireball. I’ll bet his discovery of McKean was precipitated by researching apologetics for Apple’s use of “funnest” in its latest iPod touch ads. Oddly enough, ten years ago I’d have made a fuss about funnest, but now I don’t care anymore. Think how hypocritical it would be for a Trinidadian to be correcting people’s colloquial neologisms. Bad grammar, okay—even Trinidadian dialect does have its own rules—but I’ve stopped complaining about people saying “revert back” or “irregardless.”

So yeah, Erin McKean:

Zip It

I started a free trial of Zip.ca last month, and I’m going to stay on as a subscriber. 11 titles for $24.95 a month works out to $2.27 per movie, which beats the pants off Blockbuster and Rogers. Even if I only watched five of my 11 movies in a month, that’s still a competitive $4.99 per rental. I abandoned Rogers a long time ago when they refused to abandon late fees. As for Blockbuster: now that my buddy Adam doesn’t work there anymore, I have no reason to darken their door.

One acid test I am performing with Zip is how soon they can get me The Company of Wolves, a Neil Jordan movie with a very limited audience I saw over two decades ago.

McCain to Hillary Supporters: “Here, a vagina!”

That’s how Wanda summed it up last night, and I don’t think I need to add another word.
